ABSTRACT
This paper examines the significant role of libraries and information centres in enhancing curriculum planning and development processes, drawing on Ralph Tyler’s Curriculum Model as a theoretical framework. Using a desk research approach, the study relies on existing literature and secondary sources to analyze the contributions of libraries and information centres to education. The paper begins by comparing the functions of libraries and information centres, discussing various types of libraries—including public, academic, special, private, and virtual libraries—and their fundamental roles in supporting curriculum implementation. Likewise, it explores different types of information centres, such as information analysis centres, clearinghouses, documentation centres, and referral centres, highlighting their importance in facilitating access to relevant educational resources. Furthermore, the study examines curriculum conceptions, definitions, and the curriculum planning and development process, with a particular emphasis on Tyler’s four fundamental curriculum questions. The discussion underscores how libraries and information centres play a critical role at each stage of Tyler’s model—from providing instructional materials that inform learning objectives to supporting assessment through information literacy programs and research resources. The paper concludes with key recommendations, including the need for school proprietors to establish functional libraries in educational institutions in alignment with curriculum standards. Government should ensure that both public and private school libraries are well-equipped with modern facilities and diverse collections that will to foster effective curriculum implementation and lifelong learning.
