This study aimed to investigate the perception and attitudes of undergraduate students towards job prospects in librarianship. The objectives were to; assess the perception of undergraduate students towards job prospects in LIS programme; ascertain the attitudes of undergraduate students towards LIS programme; identify the various job prospects in LIS programme and; identify challenges associated with pursuing a career in LIS programme. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. Population of the study was 200 undergraduate students of library and information science in Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. No sample size was taken. Therefore, total enumeration (census) was used. Questionnaire was used as data collection instrument with a Cronbach's Alpha reliability of 0.75. Findings revealed that the highest agreement among students was about getting aware of LIS professions as they advanced in their study while the lowest agreement was about getting to know LIS professions from interactions. However, one of the challenges of great concern associated in pursuing careers in librarianship is because LIS professionals are not well remunerated and they are not well recognized and respected. Conclusively, students perceived LIS as last resort. They didn’t want to study the course initially, but later have positive attitude towards it and they are aware of the various job prospects in librarianship. Therefore, it was recommended that LIS graduates, professors, lecturers and the department of LIS itself should further intensify sensitization and awareness about LIS courses through publications, seminars. Also, library and information science curricular should be redesigned to capture career talks, multi-disciplinary tasking and management to encourage recruitment of students as well as to suit the current trend of career development in the 21st century librarianship etc. Keywords: Library and Information Science Programme, Job Prospect, Usumanu Danfodio University Sokoto
