ABSTRACT
This study examined the influence of school media resources on the academic development of secondary school students in Umuahia educational zone, Abia State, Nigeria. The study was guided by two research questions and two hypotheses. The study adopted a correlation design that involved simple linear method. The population of the study is three thousand, eight hundred and ninety- eight (3898) students of five selected secondary schools in Umuhia Educational Zone, Abia State. A proportionate sampling techniques was adopted, five secondary schools were selected and determine a sample of three hundred and fifty-four students used for the study. The instrument used for data collection is rating scale and its captioned “Use of Media Resources and Academic Development” (UMRAD). Data obtained for the study were analyzed using coefficient of determination (r2) and Pearson (r) to answer research questions, while hypotheses were tested using t-test of significance of correlation. The study found that there is a high positive and significant relationship between the use of book resources and academic development of students (teenagers) and high positive and significant relationship between the use of audio-visual resources and academic development of students in secondary schools in Umuahia education zone, Abia State. Based on these findings, the study recommended that secondary school management should always make available relevant book resources in the library since their use by students relates positively with their academic development; and that the use of audio-visual resources for teaching and learning in school media centers in secondary schools should be encouraged since it was established that it is positively linked to students’ academic development.
